Hysteroscopic Procedure

A hysteroscopic procedure is a minimally invasive surgery used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the uterus. It involves the use of a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted tube with a camera, that is inserted through the vagina and cervix to visualize the uterine cavity. This procedure allows doctors to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids, polyps, adhesions, and other abnormalities without the need for open surgery.

What Conditions Can a Hysteroscopy Diagnose or Treat?

A hysteroscopic procedure is often recommended to diagnose or treat a range of gynecological issues, including:

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Unexplained heavy or irregular periods.

Fibroids or Polyps: Non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can cause bleeding or fertility issues.

Intrauterine Adhesions (Asherman's Syndrome): Scar tissue inside the uterus, often caused by prior surgeries or infections.

Septate Uterus: A congenital uterine abnormality that can cause recurrent miscarriages or fertility problems.

Endometrial Biopsy: Taking a sample of the uterine lining for testing in cases of abnormal bleeding or suspected cancer.

Infertility Investigation: To identify structural problems that may be preventing conception or leading to miscarriages.

How is the Hysteroscopic Procedure Performed?

Hysteroscopy can be performed either as a diagnostic or an operative procedure, depending on the condition being treated.

1. Preparation: Hysteroscopy is often done as an outpatient procedure. Patients may receive local, regional, or general anesthesia depending on the complexity of the surgery.

2. Insertion of the Hysteroscope: The hysteroscope is carefully inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. The uterine cavity is expanded with saline to provide a clear view for the doctor.

3. Diagnosis or Treatment:  If the procedure is diagnostic, the doctor will examine the uterus for any abnormalities. If operative, small instruments can be passed through the hysteroscope to remove polyps, fibroids, or scar tissue or to correct other abnormalities.

4. Duration: The entire procedure usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on whether it’s diagnostic or therapeutic.

Recovery and Post-Procedure Care

After the procedure, patients may experience mild cramping or spotting for a few days. Recovery is typically quick, with most women able to return to normal activities within a day or two. However, certain precautions are necessary to ensure optimal healing:

Rest and Recovery: Light activities are allowed, but avoid strenuous exercises or heavy lifting for a few days.

Monitoring: If there is prolonged or heavy bleeding, fever, or severe pain, it is important to contact the doctor immediately.

Sexual Intercourse: Avoid sexual activity for at least one-week post-procedure or until your doctor advises.

Medications: Pain relievers may be prescribed for post-operative discomfort, and antibiotics may be given to prevent infection.

Precautions Before and After Hysteroscopy

Before undergoing a hysteroscopic procedure, there are several key precautions to take into account:

Timing: The procedure is usually performed when you are not menstruating, as the uterine lining is thinner and easier to visualize.

Infection Screening: Any infections should be treated before the procedure to reduce the risk of complications.

Pregnancy: Hysteroscopy should not be done if you are pregnant.

Post-Procedural Care: Follow-up appointments may be necessary to monitor healing, especially after operative hysteroscopy.
